  3.    Copernicus radically altered the accepted Earth
  4. centered model of the universe.
  5.    Dismissing Ptolemy's elaborate model of equants
  6. (which compromised the principle of uniform circular
  7. motions), Copernicus chose a different model: he 
  8. placed not the Earth but the Sun at the center of 
  9. the universe. He put forth his theory in his "On the 
  10. Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres" in 1543. 
  11.    Copernicus correctly deduced that the Earth
  12. rotates daily on its axis and orbits the sun every
  13. year. Moreover, he proposed that the planets also
  14. orbit the sun and that the earth wobbles like a top
  15. (precesses on its axis) as it rotates. This theory
  16. explained the retrograde motion of Mars and why the
  17. planets Mercury and Venus never stray far from the 
  18. Sun in the sky.
